Celebrating Sapphic Identities on Sapphic Visibility Day

Welcome to the comprehensive collection of resources dedicated to supporting and celebrating the diverse experiences of the sapphic community!

What does “Sapphic” mean?

Sapphic has become a chosen identity for many women, nonbinary, trans, and gender nonconforming folks.

Sapphic is an umbrella term that expresses the sexuality and romantic attraction of queer women, nonbinary, and trans people that have sexual and romantic attraction to each other.

Thinking of it Simply: “ABCD”

Imagine "Sapphic" as the "ABCD" (Anything But Cis Dudes) of the LGBTQ+ world. It represents those attracted to queer women, nonbinary and trans people, who are women, nonbinary and trans themselves. Cisgender men (men who identify with the gender assigned at birth) wouldn't be considered Sapphic.

Where Does “Sapphic” Come From?

"Sapphic" actually comes from the legendary Greek poet Sappho, who lived way back in the 6th century BCE. Her poems were all about love, desire, and guess what? Yep, a whole lot of strong feelings for other women! Sappho's work became so famous that the term eventually came to describe anyone drawn to women. Fast forward to the 21st century, and "Sapphic" was kind of chilling in dusty old dictionaries. But then, something magical happened in 2017, online news articles started buzzing with the term. Hashtags, increased LGBTQ+ visibility, and indie novel creators all played a part. Now, "Sapphic" has exploded back into our lives, and this time, it is bigger and more inclusive than ever!

Sapphic vs. Lesbian: What’s the difference?

Lesbian and Sapphic are related terms, but with a key difference: Scope

Lesbian is a sexual orientation. It specifically refers to someone who is exclusively attracted to women while Sapphic is a broader term.

Think of Lesbian as a specific label.

It describes someone's exact identity.

Think of Sapphic as a broader category.

It encompasses a wider range of experiences under one term.

Ultimately, the best term to use depends on the individual's preference. If someone identifies as lesbian, that's the most accurate way to describe them. But "Sapphic" can be a great way to acknowledge the broader spectrum of queer women, nonbinary, and trans people who have sexual and romantic attraction to each other.
